Bridges Houston, TX

Dental Bridges

Is a gap in your smile making you self-conscious? Houston Dental Esthetics provides an appliance called a dental bridge to “bridge” gaps in a single arch of teeth.

The bridge replaces the missing teeth by placing one or more false teeth between two natural abutment teeth. The replacement teeth are usually made of porcelain and will blend in with your natural teeth, although you could decide to have them made of gold.

Porcelain Crowns Houston, TX

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a shell of material that can cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, down to the gums. The crown can restore a tooth to its original size and shape.

Crowns are used in many different dental procedures, but in this case, they cover damaged or severely infected teeth. Crowns are also incorporated into certain dentures or bridges and are used when root canals are needed.

Fillings Houston, TX

Dental Fillings

A dental filling is one of the most common dental procedures, aside from cleanings. When decay has damaged a tooth (called a cavity), the decay needs to be removed as soon as possible.

After the decay is removed, the hole left from the removal is repaired with a “filling.” A special material is applied to the prepared cavity to restore the tooth back to its normal shape and function. If a cavity is left unattended for too long, the decay will not only spread, but it offers a weak area of the body for bacteria to enter.

The larger area of decay will require more extensive and more expensive repairs, and the bacteria can cause bigger health problems than just a simple filling.

Dental Implants Houston, TX

Dental Implants

Advances in dentistry over the past 30 years have made dental implants increasingly popular when needing to replace missing teeth.

An implant looks and feels more like a natural tooth than other replacement methods because it replaces not only the tooth but also the root. The implant integrates with the jawbone over the healing period, providing a sturdy base for a permanent crown.

Dental Sealants

When children are growing up, this is the time to learn all kinds of things about life. Dental care is an important life skill. A good oral hygiene regimen is critical for oral health throughout their lifetime.

Unfortunately, during childhood, several factors make dental health tricky. The small size of the mouth, baby teeth, erupting adult teeth, and learning how to care for their mouth properly can present difficulties.

Dentures Houston, TX

Dentures

For gaps in teeth or a whole row of missing teeth, dentures are one popular option for replacement. Houston Dental Esthetics offers dentures and can help you decide which type of dentures are the best for your dental situation.

Dentures are removable appliances, making it easy for cleaning. Dentures are removed before bedtime each evening and replaced in the morning. Cleaning is done by gentle brushing to remove plaque and food particles, and then they are stored in water overnight to keep them from drying out. Effervescent cleansers are also available to add to the water to help the cleaning process, but they do not have to be used every night.

Flap Surgery

Periodontitis is gum disease. Gingival flap surgery is one treatment used to treat this gum disease and fight infection. The initial treatment for moderate or advanced gum disease is scaling and root planing. If scaling and planing do not help in treating periodontitis, flap surgery may be recommended. Osseous (or bone) surgery can also be performed along with flap surgery if needed.

Flap surgery treats the gums by separating them from the teeth and folding them back to allow access to the foot of the tooth and the bone. Before flap surgery is performed, the plaque and tartar are removed from around the teeth. General health and current medications will be assessed to determine if it is safe to perform the flap surgery.

Hygiene

Good dental hygiene is required for good dental health to last throughout a lifetime. Babies should be introduced to good dental hygiene before they are one year old. As soon as baby teeth begin to erupt, parents should clean the teeth every day using gauze or a small brush. A baby’s first dental visit should be six months after the first tooth comes in (normally around one year).

As babies become toddlers, teaching them how to maintain a regular oral regimen to teach them how to care for their teeth properly for years to come.

Scaling & Root Planing Houston, TX

Scaling and Root Planing

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. Brushing can keep a certain amount of plaque from forming, but not all. If plaque is not removed, the bacteria can cause inflammation and gum disease.

Inflammation causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, leaving spaces or pockets. The pockets then trap more plaque below the gum line and cannot be removed with regular brushing and flossing. If this plaque remains below the gum line, it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss.

TMJ Treatment Houston, TX

TMJ

Most people refer to TMJ as pain or problems with their jaw. Technically, TMJ is the abbreviation for temporomandibular joint. The TMJ is the hinge between the skull and the jaw that provides for all movement (up, down, and side to side) of the jaw. Without this hinge, we would not be able to talk or eat.

A problem with the TMJ is more appropriately called TMD, which stands for temporomandibular disorder and encompasses many different symptoms.

Extractions Houston, TX

Tooth Extraction

Although the ultimate goal for good oral health is to retain as many natural teeth as possible throughout adulthood, accidents happen. Disease happens. Teeth are damaged and require extraction.

Extraction is the medical term for the removal of an entire tooth, including the root, from the jawbone. While no one likes having a tooth pulled, the procedure is as gruesome as back in the days of the Wild West. It is not the painful ordeal that it used to be. Modern technology has made tooth extraction mostly pain-free. Patients who have gone through it usually say that the anesthetic injection is the most painful part, but even that isn’t intolerable.

Veneers Houston, TX

Veneers

Damage to one or more teeth can be covered with a veneer. A veneer is a tooth-colored material that is custom-made and fits directly over the front of a tooth.

A veneer can fix worn, chipped, or misshapen teeth or cover a gap between teeth, as well as change the length, shape, or size of a tooth. Stubborn stains that cannot be otherwise removed can be covered with a veneer.
